Niners do everything but post Taylor Mays on CraigsList

O’Dea alum Taylor Mays is available for a trade.

What, you didn’t get the e-mail?

And yes, there was an e-mail that was apparently sent from the San Francisco 49ers to the other 31 NFL teams. Yeah. You read that right. An e-mail, as first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.

There is a serious side to this question. Namely, would the Seahawks be interested? When Mays entered the NFL out of USC last year, there was a feeling that he wouldn’t fit with the secondary of certain teams. Specifically, he wouldn’t have the coverage skills to play in a scheme with interchangeable safeties.

The Seahawks don’t play in such a system. In fact, there safeties are firmly divided between free and strong. And while Seattle opted to go in a different direction in last year’s draft — choosing free safety Earl Thomas No. 14 oveall — coach Pete Carroll said after the Seahawks most certainly could have been interested in Mays later in the draft. Mays was chosen in the second round, No. 49 overall, by San Francisco. Seattle didn’t choose in the second round until pick No. 70. After being picked by the 49ers, Mays was not pleased with Carroll, his coach at USC.

Well, a year later, would Seattle be interested? Kam Chancellor, who’s built similarly to Mays, is slated as the starting strong safety. San Francisco didn’t exactly maximize its bargaining positioning with its send-all e-mail approach.
